The next morning, I wake up to a pounding headache.

Groaning, I sit up and realize I’m still wearing the dress and heels from last night.

Oh shit. Last night.

Images of the night before flash through my head and I cringe as I remember everything that went down. Crawling out of bed, I stumble down the hall on my way to our kitchen. I see June standing against the counter, her eyes fixated on the living room. When she sees me approaching, she offers me a strange smile.

“What’s going on?” she asks me.

I walk past her and grab a water bottle out of the fridge. “I drank way too much last night.”

Nodding, June gets a distant look in her eyes. “I tried to call you last night. My mom told me something that I really need to talk to you about. It’s Cody,” she says, but I already know what she is going to tell me.

“He’s out of jail,” I say, and June’s eyes go wide.

“He showed up here last night after Blaze brought me home,” I tell her.

“So, that explains why he’s sleeping on the couch then,” June says, a knowing smile creeping on her face.

My head shoots to the living room to find Blaze sprawled out on the couch. His large body barely fits on the sofa and it’s almost comical seeing him like that.

“Oh my god, he slept here?” I ask, flabbergasted.

“I guess so. What happened?” she asks me.

I quietly explain to June what all happened last night. As I tell her, she seems anxious over the events.

“You need to call the police, Remy. What if Cody hurts you again?” she asks, tears brimming in her eyes.

I know that June is right. Cody is dangerous and he can’t be here. “I will call the police and let them know that he came here,” I promise her.

Just then, Blaze stirs and both June and I stare as he wakes up, looking around.

“What the hell?” he asks, his voice deep from sleep.

“Morning,” I say, offering a smile.

June starts to make a pot of coffee and when it’s ready I grab two mugs and pour coffee for me and Blaze. June goes to shower and I take this moment to go talk with Blaze.

As I hand him his coffee, he sits up and rubs the back of his neck.

“Damn, that couch is uncomfortable,” Blaze growls.

“Well, why did you sleep here?” I ask, taking a sip of my coffee.

Blaze accepts the mug and sighs. “I wasn’t going to leave you here alone after what happened,” he tells me.

I sit down on the couch, giving us the distance we need as I sit on the far end. I appreciate him wanting to stay and watch out for me, but I know that I owe him an explanation. I have no idea what’s going on between us, but he stood up for me last night when he could have easily walked away.

“About that,” I begin, biting my lip in nervousness.

“Don’t do that,” Blaze growls.

“Do what?” I ask, confused.
